Northwest Missouri State football will meet a pair of MIAA rivals in scrimmages during a fall season stunted by the coronavirus pandemic.

The Bearcats will face Washburn in Topeka, KS on November 7, then host Central Missouri November 21. Washburn will play at Central Missouri on Northwest's off week of November 14.

Northwest athletics released the schedule nearly three weeks after the MIAA announced that there would not be a formal football conference champion during the 2020-21 academic year, but said in a release that teams could schedule up to four joint practices, games, or scrimmages.

“It’s not how we drew up this season, but I’m happy that we could work together with Central Missouri and Washburn to give our football student-athletes an opportunity to suit up in a competition type of atmosphere,” head coach Rich Wright said in a statement. “The safety of our student-athletes and coaching staffs are the top priority and with this controlled environment we will be able to take the field and learn about each of our teams.”

The scrimmages will not count toward school or coaching records. Northwest is also reporting that the teams have "entered into a gentleman's agreement" which will only have starters play in the first half and reserves for the second half of the game.

Northwest will limit attendance to the family of players. Social distancing and face coverings will be required at each venue. No tailgating will be allowed.

Northwest and its opponents will be tested for COVID-19 once a week, per NCAA resocialization rules.

The scrimmages are subject to change and cancellation.

Northwest will provide radio coverage of each scrimmage on KXCV-KRNW with John Coffey and Matt Tritten on the call. The home school will offer video of each scrimmage on The MIAA Network.
